Possum Talks – From the Beginning
Founders, Michael and Shari Buie, are life-long believers and followers of Christ. Their service activities over the years have included small group leaders, Bible study group facilitators, Michael’s involvement in deaf ministry, Shari’s involvement in drama ministry and probably most importantly, both their current involvement in jail and prison ministry.
Shari’s heart for at-risk youth began when she was a speaker for Aim For Success, a nationwide abstinence organization. While employed by Aim, she developed and piloted a 16-week program for the Dallas Independent School District serving inner-city youth. She experienced firsthand the difficulties facing children of incarcerated parents, especially dads.
Shari now facilitates a weekly Overcomers class for women inmates at the Collin County Detention Center. And she and Michael co-facilitate an Overcomers class for men at the Buster Cole Unit in Bonham. Shari and Michael have served as support couple for marriage seminars at The Walls Unit in Huntsville, Texas. Of course, Possum Talks is the ministry closest to Shari’s heart, as she and Michael work together to break the generational cycle of incarceration confronting our nation.
Married in 1970, Michael and Shari have a son, a daughter, and four granddaughters. He is a small business owner in Plano, Texas. His ministry experience includes serving as ministry board trustee for 18 years and its chairman for two years. He pioneered a program for the deaf using court reporting real-time computer display at Fellowship Bible Church North in Plano, Texas in 1996. He co-teaches Overcomers at Collin County Detention Center and Buster Cole State Jail in Bonham, Texas. Michael has a heart for the imprisoned, especially those who are searching for biblical truth and who are eager to become faithful fathers according to the example of the Faithful Father of Luke 15 — even behind bars.
